The highlands are located in the far north of Scotland and are bisected by the fault of Glen More known for its Caledonian Canal and Loch Ness. The region is famous for its heather-covered hills in the spring, its ferns, its castles and legends, its lakes, fjords (west) valleys and dark colors but attractive. The massive highlands is an ancient volcanic massif, eroded by glaciers that have given their present forms. The country is wet, damp due to the Atlantic Ocean and mountains. This moisture has led to the creation of wetlands where peat expands to contribute to the richness in species, especially birds.
